How does Shazam work? How does it recognise that tune that we can’t help jigging along to, even in the lift? We will discover how all music can be described through a myriad of harmonics, from the sound of a horn to Gangnam Style. Music has always been a way to express the most disparate feelings: love, hatred, friendship…it could be the most intriguing and immediate medium that exists to convey a particular emotion. How has music evolved with the arrival of Information Technology? Billions of video channel views can reveal the tastes of a population, yet we still do not know exactly why a particular tune gets into our heads to the point of making us dance even in the lift. In this digital era there has been an incredible development of song recognition software: applications that play a fundamental role in our artistic life. But how do they transform into bits what we experience as uncontrollable emotions that give us goose bumps? We will discover how everything can be described through an infinite forest of harmonics, simple sounds that are like the building blocks of any music ever written, for any musical sentiment.
