“Nodi virtuali, legami informali: Internet alla ricerca di regole”

Speakers: Dianora Poletti, Paolo Passaglia

The volume groups together the results of the study meeting titled “Virtual knots, informal ties: the Internet in search of rules” organised by the Law Faculty at the University of Pisa on 6 and 7 October 6 2016. The thirty year anniversary of the birth of the Internet and the five big web players in Italy, evoked by the title of the conference, offered the organisers (who are also the editors of the volume) the opportunity to create a time for sharing and comparing experiences, with the idea of helping to mark a milestone in the difficult construction of what could roughly be defined “the law of the Internet”. A range of speakers from different backgrounds took part in the conference, above all demonstrating the need to set aside the old definitions, internal and external, of law; a strong presence of young law students, alongside some of the most distinguished scholars of the subject, allowed the conference to identify some shared questions that led to some lively exchanges of opinion; the presence of sector operators confirmed the need not to abandon the Internet to struggle alone, but to identify and share its essential organisational bases. The intention of the meeting was the same that supported the decision to launch a new series of books, as a way to to host contributions to investigating the complex issues raised by the pervasiveness of Internet use from an interdisciplinary point of view, creating a dialogue between law, social sciences and computer science that will be essential for understanding these complex and closely interrelated phenomena.
